I am Dr. Mehdi Alam Rajabi, a gastroenterologist and a member of the faculty of Iran University of Medical Sciences. At the service of friends at the Noor charity for cancer patients – There’s a question of: “what to do if we get colon cancer”. A patient visits their doctor or have a colonoscopy done and they hear they have a big mass in their colon and they receive pathobiology results. What should they do?

Of course, we expect for the person to not be stressed and act it’s not a big deal. However, it is a big deal and it challenges the person and their family, Therefore, that family needs a series of supports and a series of instructions. What’s important for these patients and their family is to know where to go next. They should go to a surgeon or internal specialist, gastroenterologist or cancer specialist and oncologist. These are usually the only options. What I wanna say is that the person should go to a center instead. Or to a doctor that has all these specialties.

Because when it comes to colon cancer and cancer patients, we need different specialists. We need a gastroenterologist, a cancer and oncologist who can perform chemotherapy or radiotherapy, a psychiatric specialist for the person and her family, and a nutritionist and a radiologist who can interpret the photos well. We call this group a multi-specialty team. It is necessary to bring these together in one set and consult all the patients at the beginning and decide on a treatment plan.

It’s not like a surgeon can do whatever they want or a chemotherapy specialist to do whatever they want, same goes for radiotherapy. It is very important for the medical team to decide things from the beginning and knows what they’re doing.
The team evaluates the patient considering their initial predictions, And then they realize how accurate their predictions were and how much is still left. So they decide on the next steps in the treatment. So it’s important for the patient to goes to a suitable center where the staff includes several specialists.
