Hello, I am Dr. Negar Moshiri, a breast surgery fellow and health ambassador at the Noor Charity Institute. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, dedicated to raising awareness and educating people about this cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, including in Iran. Last year, we had approximately 17,000 new cases of breast cancer. And the incidence of this cancer increases every year. Fortunately, breast cancer has very good methods for early detection. which helps us diagnose the disease at very early stages and when it is entirely treatable. and perform the necessary treatments for it.

The signs of breast cancer are a set of symptoms that if respected ladies and in some cases even gentlemen – as this disease exists in men as well – be familiar with them, they can visit a doctor whenever they notice these symptoms. Until the necessary diagnostic and treatment measures are taken for them.

The most common sign of this disease is feeling a lump in the breast. If women feel any lump in their breasts or feel a new firmness, they should definitely see a specialist. Often, breast cancer is diagnosed simply by feeling a lump like this. Another issue is the changes that can be seen in the skin of the breast, nipple, and areola. As indentation or dimpling and flaking of the skin around the areola or nipple. These can also be indicative of breast cancer in some cases.

Another issue is the development of scars on the skin of the breast. These are wounds that do not heal well and have been present on the skin of the breast for some time. And also glands that may sometimes be felt under the armpit. In the area where lymph nodes are located, and sometimes breast cancer can also affect that area.

Next, discharge coming from the nipples. Often, women may observe discharges that usually do not raise concerns. Such as white-colored discharges, especially noticeable after breastfeeding in women. But there are types of nipple discharges that are very important for us, especially if the discharge is bloody. Or if it is clear and watery. If the discharge occurs spontaneously, from one side, These are very important to us. If women notice such symptoms in themselves, they should definitely consult a doctor.

Another issue is breast pain. Breast pain generally doesn’t have any serious underlying causes in most cases. And a variety of benign breast conditions can cause this pain. But sometimes, if the breast pain is unilateral and localized to a specific area of the breast, it can be indicative of breast cancer and needs to be investigated.

The final sign is skin swelling of the breast. What you may have heard referred to as “orange peel” skin texture. Actually, it is swelling of the skin of the breast. If women notice such a problem, it is better for them to consult a doctor.

A very important point is that breast cancer, in many cases, especially in the early stages, may have no symptoms. We have screening methods and check-ups to detect cases of breast cancer that haven’t shown any symptoms yet. The most common method you may be familiar with is mammography, which is performed in women over the age of forty. It is highly recommended that screening methods appropriate for each age group be regularly performed. So that breast cancer can be easily treated and fully cured when identified in very early stages.
